Our Ghosts

John Stacy, who owned the Bull's Head after 1920, was known to be a heavy drinker. In desperation, his wife joined the local chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union as a committed, anti-alcohol advocate.

Apparitions started in 1964, when Monty Allen, the owner at that time, created a dining room and bar in Mrs. Stacy's old bedroom. Waitresses and bartenders sometimes saw a woman in a long white filmy gown, perhaps a nightgown, walking through the tables, chairs and walls of the room. From time to time, salt and pepper shakers disappeared, and pieces of silverware rose from the tables and flew at the bar. Then, as today, the ghost's likely identity is Mrs. Stacy.

Despite moving the bar into the Cellar Pub, the events have increased: guests have reported seeing a woman in "period dress" wandering through the building, strange lights and shadows have appeared and unconnected crank-handle phones ring mysteriously! Frequently, the staff has heard footsteps and other noises upstairs when no one was up there.

We can't promise a ghostly encounter; but, at The Bull's Head, our "spirits" are the finest and our food is heavenly!
